In this issue of JAMA Ophthalmology, Tailor and colleagues aimed to evaluate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to create plain language summaries of standard ophthalmology notes to improve nonophthalmologists’ understanding of the specialty notes. The researchers reported that their large language model–generated plain language summaries was associated with greater diagnostic understanding, note satisfaction, and clarity among nonophthalmology clinicians and professionals compared with standard ophthalmology notes alone. The authors found that plain language summaries may aid in interdisciplinary communication between ophthalmologists and nonophthalmologist clinicians, which is a cornerstone of team-based care.
