In the Bifocal Lenses in Nearsighted Kids (BLINK) randomized clinical trial, investigators studied the effect of multifocal soft contact lenses on myopia progression, concluding that high-add power soft contact lenses slowed the progression of myopia in children. Why is control of myopia progression important? Worldwide, myopia prevalence has increased over the past 3 decades, and some estimates predict half of the global population will be myopic by 2050. Various interventions for slowing progressive myopia have been described, including antimuscarinic eye drops, bifocal spectacle lenses, multifocal contact lenses, novel special lens designs, orthokeratology, outdoor activities, and red light therapy, yet no singular treatment has emerged as a gold standard with lasting effects.
