NEW YORK — In this presentation from OSN New York Retina, Nicholas Mahoney, MD, discusses thyroid eye disease.
Mahoney said thyroid eye disease is an orbital inflammatory disorder, and a few other conditions mimic its effect on patients, including infectious etiologies, vascular disorders and neoplasms.
“The main one is an inflammation that is not related to thyroid antibodies,” Mahoney said. “Idiopathic orbital inflammation can be given a couple of flavors depending on what is being affected — the lacrimal gland, an extraocular muscle. It might just be Tenon’s, which we might see as tenonitis, or you might see posterior scleritis.”
