CHICAGO — In this Healio Video Perspective from the AAO meeting, Alfredo A. Sadun, MD, PhD, of Doheny Eye Institute UCLA discusses when it may be time for an older ophthalmologist to consider retiring.
Sadun shared an experience in which a cognitive dysfunction test was used to assess an older colleague and discussed the challenges that may arise when navigating this situation.
“If you start to institute rules after the age of 70, that is contrary to the American Disabilities Act and is an act of [ageism],” he said. “At the same time, we feel compelled to protect the public. At the same time, we want to be good to our colleagues.”
